Dublin Summer League
2008 Summer League regular season has come to an end in dramatic fashion! Green managed (rather decisively) to maintain their domination of the table, keeping them in first position going into the tournament. Organics managed to barely hold on to their 2nd place spot. However, there was some position switching between 3rd and 4th as The Bears managed to take home the coveted Spirit Prize (and the accompanying 4 points), combining that with 2 more bonus points (for scoring over 7 and for most players - 15, AGAIN!), they managed to jump Blue Steel in the table in spite of taking a defeat on the night!
As for the lower half, White Wash disappointingly swapped their 5th place spot with Purple Reign due to a personell problem. That's right a forfeit! Y.R.B. and Team Friends complete the table at 7th and 8th respectively, thus setting the stage for a killer tournament in August!
And this is how it all went down:
The big news of the night was the Spirit vote, which was eecked out by the Bears, receiving 19 vote points (out of 21 possible). The runners-up were Team Friends, who received 18 vote points. Sorry there's no consolation prize! In spite of a lack-luster match-record, The Bears have really proven the value of the Spirit of the sport, earning themselves a much-deserved 3rd place!
On the pitches, at 7:00pm, the home pitch saw a tight duel between the Organics and Y.R.B. The Organics broke out into an early lead, which the Yellow Rats just couldn't quite overcome. The highlight came when Fergus attempted a World's Greatest which - as graceful as it was - failed to find a receiver... yet mere minutes later, as if to redeem himself, he connect a Greatest to teammate Buggy, who fired it home for a score. Fantastic! Allen of Organics went out with a knee injury, and that just about gave Y.R.B. the edge they needed, but Organics held on to the end with an 8-6 final score, thus securing themselves the 2 spot in the table...
Meanwhile, on the away pitch, The Bears were out 15-strong against Blue Steel. But sheer numbers were not enough to intimidate the steely nerves of Blue Steel, in spite of several marathon points. The Steel held on to a 9-6 victory over The Bears.
At 8:00, Green and Team Friends were so eager to play, they were already five minutes into their match when the official game time began! Team Friends showed a good face, and the end score certainly didn't reflect the heart with which they played, but they just couldn't beat the domination that Green brought. The whole sideline erupted when Team Friends connected for the point that eliminated their bagel. The end score was a shocking 17-1 to Green.
On the other pitch, White Wash fans were shocked and appalled at the pathetic turnout of their team. With only four players - heroes, really: Rickard, Scott, Cormac and Kelly - White wash took the forfeit with bitter smiles. A complete embarrassment to the long-standing White Wash tradition of having enough players to play! All credit to Purple Reign, who showed with more than sufficient numbers, and a great attitude as well. The consolation match was entertaining indeed.
And so begins the tournament, on August 11th, where White Wash (if they can get the numbers out) face The Bears (who no doubt will have numbers!). Blue Steel will meet Purple Reign. Then Green will face a revenge-seeking Team Friends, as The Organics attempt to prove themselves once again against Y.R.B. Don't count on history repeating itself in August... all bets are off!
