WFDF at SportAccord

A full report of their activities will be available on the WFDF web site soon but here is a snipet of some of the more exciting developments.

SportAccord is looking to organise a World Beach Games which will be an all expenses paid sporting showcase. A short list of sports is being compiled and includes the like sof volleyball, surfing, triathlon and football. This event is being proposed for late 2012 or early 2013. Should ultimate be included, it is expected that the upcoming World Championship Beach Ultimate will be the primary qualifying event.

Needless to say, the broadcast exposure and increased profile of ultimate not only world wide but also within international sporting governing bodies would be tremendous. While it may leed to other opportunities to compete at similar multi sport events it could also lead to improvements at our own international ultimate events.

The second development relates to the World Games to be held in Colombia in 2013. For those that don't know, the World Games is multi-sport event run along the same models as the Olympics and is generally regarded as the place sports need to be if they wish to make it in to the Olympic program. The headline sport at the last World Games was rugby 7s.

The president of the executive committe of the World Games 2013 released the following statement:

"We believe we can use the World Games to promote worldwide the idea of taking responsibility for ones actions with regard the environment."

"We are using the sport ULTIMATE as a symbol for this initiative. ULTIMATE has no referee and players have to use the principle of fair play to determine the course of the game. It makes them take resposibility for their actions. It creates an understanding of moral and ethical principles and reveals bad behaviour."

To be held up as a figurehead for the entire games is a great honour for ultimate and will thrust the sport into the limelight like never before.
