South-West League Round 2

Unusually for an ultimate event in Cork, players arrived at the Farm to be welcomed by some nasty rain. Eventually we were goaded out of the cars by Steve "Wasabi" to start a warm up on a muddy pitch. Rob Giller and myself got the players going with some O drills until the Dublin coaching contingent of Dom, Cian and Dave arrived. As at the Galway leg of the league the focus was on cutting and continuity. Everyone got covered in mud and then the rain stopped.

The first match was UL vs UCC's intervarsity team. UL, coached by "Perfect" Dave, had plenty of possession but were continually turned over by clever and physical D from Cork, with Wasabi diving for numerous interceptions and James Finn poaching into paths of cutters.

Being coached by Cian, UCC converted their own possession with ease and closed the game out before time 13 - 1.

Meanwhile Galway, with a few pick-ups, were being drilled and psyched up by Dom, their coach for the day. UCC - Galway was a much less one-sided affair and this time Cork's O suffered from being stifled by a very hard running Galway D, and their D was simply thrown over with long plays. Galway stepped up to an early lead which they never lost, taking the game 10 - 6.

The last match between Galway and Limerick would decide the league's winners. Following Dom's advice of "keep it simple" Galway stuck to their long game with endless running from Luke, Yassin and Antonio.

Limerick never gave up despite being berated by "Fitness" Brian who, for a change, didn't win all the aerial battles. Galway were too much for the Ninjas taking the game 11 - 3.

A special mention should go to UCC's "Small" Paul Nolan who played his socks off for Galway, dropping nothing, assisting and scoring points and one outrageous sky D.

A big Thank you to Dominick, Cian and Dave for the coaching initiative. I hope this sets the pattern for the future. I think it's generally
agreed that this year's format is a great improvement on the previous Winter League and hopefully participation will continue to expand in the future.

Results:
Cork 13 - 1 Limerick
Cork 6 - 10 Galway
